One aspect of L. Ron Hubbard's personal philosophy was to help people accomplish all they were capable of accomplishing. One aspect of his doing this was the Writers and Illustrators of the Future contest and the Science Fiction and Fantasy publication by that same name that appears is published annually.

According to the Writers of the Future web site, the contest was first established and sponsored by L. Ron Hubbard in 1983, " at discovering, and eventually publishing, deserving amateur and aspiring writers."

But his supporting of artists, and providing the means by which they could gain exposure or improve their skill began far earlier than that.

For example, in his essay "Search for Research" Ron begins with a familiar problem (familiar to any writer, that is):

"All of us want to sell more stories and write better ones. It is hard to believe that there exists a writer with soul so dead that he would not. But, from careful observation, I have come to the heart-breaking conclusion that while writers usually want to do this, they generally fail to try."

And the essay goes on to give some really helpful tips to writers and would-be writers, which apply as much today as they did back then (and you can read these tips online).

L. Ron Hubbard's Own Philosophy

In an essay titled My Philosophy, L. Ron Hubbard once wrote: “I like to help others and count it as my greatest pleasure in life to see a person free himself from the shadows which darken his days.”

I've always been impressed with L. Ron Hubbard's care and with how true he was to his own philosophy as stated above, but now that I'm studying the Scientology basic books and lectures this has come home to me even more.

Sometimes my friends ask me about LRH, and it's not unusual that I read this quote to them. Because I believe this typifies his attitude toward life and toward other beings. He combined this with a brilliant mind and the perseverance and integrity to document and publish all his research so that anyone can study it and use it to help themselves and help others.

And the release of the new editions of the Dianetics and Scientology basic books and lectures of L. Ron Hubbard, which was announced in late June by David Miscavige, is an incredible boon to anyone who wants to learn more about the mind, the spirit and life as it is all laid out in simple if incredibly perceptive words for anyone to read or listen to.

What Motivates Mankind?

While it is true that I'll go a long way to avoid pain, it's also true that I'll put up with an awful lot of pain and discomfort to accomplish a pleasurable goal. I remember one time staying up three days straight to finish an art project because "I was so close" and didn't want to lose my train of thought. And when I finished I was so tired I could hardly move, but I was so happy!

In Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health L. Ron Hubbard debunked the psychological model that man is motivated by the avoidance of pain, pointing out that he is equally attracted by the pursuit of pleasure. And that is certainly true for me.

"There is a necessity for pleasure, a necessity as live and quivering and vital as the human heart itself. He who said that a man who had two loaves of bread should sell one to buy white hyacinth, spoke sooth . The creative, the constructive, the beautiful, the harmonious, the adventurous, yes, and even escape from the the maw of oblivion, these things are pleasure and these things are necessity."

If you are a fan of Dianetics and you haven't picked up a copy of the latest edition of the book (released in late June by David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center) I urge you to order your copy (you can do so online here). This book is such an easy read now, with a complete glossary in the back that defines not only all the Dianetics and Scientology terms but virtually any English language word you might have to look up as well. As much as I loved this book before, and I did (it was my first Scientology book), I am inspired by in now!

Scientology Basic Books and Lectures

The materials of Dianetics and Scientology comprise the largest body of information ever assembled on the mind, spirit and life, rigorously refined and codified by L. Ron Hubbard through five decades of research, investigation and development. The results of that work are contained in hundreds of books and more than 3,000 recorded lectures.

All the basic books and lectures of Scientology were released at a special event MCed by David Miscavige at the end of June, 2007.

Scientology means "knowing how to know."

The basic books of L. Ron Hubbard contain the summaries of breakthroughs and conclusions as they appeared in the developmental research track of Dianetics and Scientology. His lectures provide the running day-to-day record of research and explain the thoughts, conclusions, tests and demonstrations that lay along that route. In that regard, they are the complete record of the entire research track, providing not only the most important breakthroughs in Man’s history, but the why and how Ron arrived at them.

Are You a Friend of Yours?

In 1951 L. Ron Hubbard wrote a book called Self Analysis in which he said, "Probably the most neglected friend you have is you."

The other day I was going through a rough spot and I pulled this out and this line resonated. I realized I needed to make friends with myself again, and started using the techniques in the book. Within half an hour I was completely back to battery and then some.

Not a bad use of half an hour of my always-too-busy life. I got more done that afternoon than I'd accomplished in weeks in my previous "I'll get through it" state of mind.

Try it out some time. You can get the book online at the Bridge Publications web site.

It Makes me Feel Sick!!

Ever see something awful and it makes you actually feel physically ill? Ever wonder how the mind can turn emotional reaction into physical reaction?

Have you ever gotten really upset with someone and sometime, maybe a few hours or even a couple of days later, you came down with a cold or flu?

If you thought it might have been a coincidence, think again.

I'm reading Science of Survival by L. Ron Hubbard. This newest edition of the book, released in late June by David Miscavige. I'm on chapter 12 and I was reading along and BANG! I suddenly discovered something I'd been trying to figure out for ages!

Don't You Like Yourself?

One of my favorite quotes by L. Ron Hubbard comes from the first chapter of Self Analysis:

Ron wrote:

Are you a friend of yours?

Probably the most neglected friend you have is you. And yet every man, before he can be a true friend to the world, must first become a friend to himself.
This was a new concept when he wrote it in 1951, but even though others have spoken of this since then, Self Analysis is unique in that it WORKS, and DOES help restore self-respect and a great deal more!

Idealism in Early Scientology Writings

I was really fascinated to find out that L. Ron Hubbard was intent on a social mission from the very beginning of the Scientology movement. I knew that the aims of Scientology are aligned in that direction. I just had no idea he was looking at this way back in 1950 and 1951.

I'm reading my Scientology Basic Books and just finished Dianetics: the Modern Science of Mental Health and began Science of Survival today . and was so surprised to read the first section:

A world without insanity, without criminals and without war—this is the goal of Dianetics. For thousands of years Man has struggled forward with this conquest of the material universe, but he has known almost nothing about his most valuable possession: the human mind. Despite this obstacle of ignorance, he has made progress. But because of this obstacle, he has made progress.

The World Scene -- Has it Really Changed?

I was just reading the Dianetics book and came across one of my favorite passages.

When I first read this, America was at war and Viet Nam was where the US and the Soviet Union were squaring off. We were right in the heart of the arms race. "Terrorism" hadn't made it into our vocabulary. Al Queda had yet to be born. Iran was an ally and Iraq wasn't a subject of discussion.

The more things change the more they remain the same?

Here's the quote. I think you will see what I mean.

"No nation ever fully won a war. No nation ever finally triumphed by force of arms. No nation ever averted war by posing threat or exhibiting defense.

"Man is now faced, by these pyramiding hatreds, with weapons so powerful that Man himself may vanish from the Earth. There is no problem in the control of these weapons. They explode when and where Man tells them to explode. The problem is in the control of Man.

"There is no national problem in the world today which cannot be resolved by reason alone. All factors inhibiting a solution of the problem of war and weapons are arbitrary factors and have no more validity than the justified explanations of a their or murdered."

I recommend to anyone who really wants to do something effective about the situation we live in to read the Dianetics book. Last month a new edition of this book was released, as announced by David Miscavige at an international Scientology event. You can find a copy at the web site for Bridge Publications.

Are You Worth a Bit of Effort?

If, by dedicating a few weeks of study, you could greatly increase your understanding of yourself, your past, the people you know and people in general, wouldn't you put the time in to checking it out?

At an event held in Clearwater Florida a few weeks ago, and shown in every Scientology Church in the world over the past few weeks, David Miscavige announced the release of the Basic Scientology and Dianetics books and lectures, otherwise known simply as "The Basics."

The books are beautiful and so easy to read. They contain very comprehensive glossaries, not only of Scientology and Dianetics terms, but of other terminology that might not be fully understood. Everything has been done to make it simple read and understand these books, including an extension course anyone can enroll on to get individualized supervision by a staff member at a Scientology church to help you make sure you get it.

And these books contain the answers to so many questions.

I got my full set and have been reading them chronologically. I am amazed by the breadth of knowledge of L. Ron Hubbard and his skill as a writer in imparting it.

At the event in Florida, David Miscavige went into great detail on the books. It's an event well worth watching, and for anyone interested in learning about Scientology and Dianetics I recommend a visit to your nearest Scientology church or mission to watch it.

The Way to Happiness

The Way to Happiness web site has a new feature -- 21 video clips, each one illustrating one of the precepts of this moral code.

They are quite brilliant. The Way to Happiness is already an incredible accomplishment because it is so simple and so workable, and these videos really bring each precept to life.

Here's one on the second precept: Be Temporate.

"The books and lectures that follow form the foundation upon which The Bridge to Freedom is built. "

This is the description on the new web site at Bridge Publications of the fantastic new release of the Golden Age of Knowledge -- new editions of all 18 basic books by L. Ron Hubbard, announced this past week at an event by David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center in a brilliant speech that described all the work that went into the project.

These books are absolutely beautiful. But that's not all. Because all the original tape recorded lectures describing the research that went into these books have now also come out in CD form, with glossaries and transcripts. All totally state of the art!

You can order them online (I have!)

The Way to Happiness

I fell in love with this picture I found on The Way To Happiness web site and thought I'd share it.

The thing about this booklet which never ceases to amaze me is that any time I'm down and want a pick-me-up I check out this booklet, find something I can do a bit better as covered in the various chapters and lo and behold it does the trick. I mean, every time.

A Milestone Year

Fabulous event this year in honor of Ron's birthday. They just keep getting better, every year. This year there was an absolutely wonderful set of video interviews with people who were there with LRH in the really early days of Dianetics and Scientology.

And the other thing I love about the March 13th events is the news about the winning churches and missions. All Scientology churches and missions compete against one another and the church and mission with the best expansion for the year wins.

This year it was a real surprise - a Church I've never seen in the running - the Church of Scientology of Denmark. And boy were they excited!

To me, when I hear how well our churches are doing, how many new Volunteer Ministers are coming on board, how many books are being distributed, that's fantastic news because it is an index of how many people are learning priceless information that is making their own lives better and is rippling out into the environment.

I also loved hearing David Miscavige. I always look forward to the briefings he gives us at events. For every event he gives an overview of the best expansion news of recent months. And Mr. Miscavige usually ends the evening with a special message to Scientologists.

I walked out of this event determined to do more and help more and reach out to people like never before.

No matter how many years I'm in Scientology, when I read a book or listen to a taped lecture by L. Ron Hubbard I am again struck with Ron's brilliance, and how much he cared.

So for me, it's going to be a lot more volunteering this year. I've also set myself some new resolutions (March vs. New Years) as to my progress as a Scientologist.

L. Ron Hubbard's Birthday

As we approach March 13th, all Scientology churches are racing to complete what we call the LRH Birthday Game. It's a great contest. It pits each church against every other church in competition, but they are competing for how much they are helping their parishioners and their community. Typical of LRH that he'd create a game that would result in helping people, all over the world. The LRH Birthday Event is being held in Clearwater, Florida on March 17th. I'm sure David Miscavige will be the keynote speaker and the master of ceremonies. This has become a tradition since Mr. Miscavige took over the position of Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center in 1987.

Scientology Creed

When you read or hear the Creed of the Church of Scientology you can see immediately the value a Scientologist places on human rights and freedom to speech, expression, belief, etc.

I have to laugh when I read some of the outragreous ideas people have about Scientology and Scientologists.

Well -- at least we're not being sent to the lions like the early adherants of some new religions were.

Great Stories about Ron

Last March at the LRH Birthday event there were four people who knew Ron personally who were interviewed. One was a teenage when he ran away from home to join the Navy and served under LRH during World War II; there was a woman who was a young girl back in 1937 when LRH wrote the book Excalibur. I was so impressed in each of these interviews by how much L. Ron Hubbard cared about everyone he met.

Talk about a great role model!

I also love hearing David Miscavige summarize the latest wins at these events.

Good grief, the next March 13th Event is only less than two months away!

David Miscavige and Scientology Expansion

David Miscavige has been described as the ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion.

I've been a Scientologist for almost 40 years, and in the past 20 years since David Miscavige has been the Chairman of the Board of RTC and even more so since 9/11 when he issued his famous "wake-up call" calling all Scientologists to take to heart their responsibility for salvaging the civilization that was clearly going down for the count, the Scientology religion has been expanding at rates never seen before.

Case in point - in just two months two huge new central Scientology churches open in two major European capitals - the Church of Scientology of London and the Church of Scientology of Berlin.

But what is really exciting is the help we can give the people of those two great cities now that we have these huge churches there!

L. Ron Hubbard Exhibition at the new Church of Scientology of Berlin

This story is all over the news this week. It showed up on the Scientology Press Office on Saturday - the day of the grand opening of the Church of Scientology of Berlin.

The Church of Scientology of Berlin opened its new home today in Charlottenburg to over 5000 church members (including Academy Award nominated actress Anne Archer and Jazz legend Chick Corea), government officials and community leaders, with an invitation to all Berliners to find out for themselves the answer to the inevitable question, "What is Scientology?"

To make this possible, the ground floor of the 4,000-square-meter, 6-story glass and steel structure which is located at Otto-Suhr-Allee and Cauer Street in the Charlottenburg District, contains an extensive walk-through audio-visual public information center on Scientology beliefs and practices and the Church's activities in Berlin and around the world. Displays present the life and accomplishments of Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard and the internationally acclaimed programs that use his discoveries to combat drug abuse, illiteracy, criminality, immorality and human rights violations.

Wednesday, January 10, 2007

I'm sure L. Ron Hubbard would be so proud of the German Scientologists. These men and women have lived through some hard times. But now, with the grand opening of the Church of Scientology of Berlin I feel like it's a whole new era for the German Scientologist -- one where we will be able to freely practice our religion in the way we love to do so -- by helping our communities with the technology L. Ron Hubbard developed for improving life.

What a milestone this grand opening will be.

I'm sure David Miscavige will be there, since he announced the 13 January Grand Opening at this year's New Years event!
